J2ME & BREW
IT and Telecommunications industry professionals agree
that within the next two to five years most new IT products
will be linked to the Internet. This phenomenon will
revolutionize the usage of the IT products. No matter
where, when or what products, all will be able to connect
to the Internet and access enterprise or personal data.
In order to meet these ever growing IT equipment demands,
Sun has introduce J2ME, and Qualcomm has introduced
BREW, two online wireless application modules.
J2ME
J2ME (Java 2 Micro Edition) is a SUN developed technology,
which allows programmers to use the Java programming
language and related tools to develop programs for mobile
wireless information devices such as cellular phones
and personal digital assistants (PDAs). Devices with
systems that exploit J2ME are already available and
are expected to become even more available in the next
few years.
J2ME technology allows mobile users to check email,
use instant messaging applications, operate home appliances
via remote control and utilize mobile time management
applications. J2ME technology also allows users to download
and read e-books, play games, obtain stock information
and other financial information, download e-maps and
access dictionaries via mobile devices.
BREW
BREW (Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless) is Qualcomm's
open source application development platform for wireless
devices equipped for code division multiple access (CDMA)
technology. BREW makes it possible for developers to
create portable applications that will work on any handsets
equipped with CDMA chipsets. Because BREW runs in between
the application and the chip operating system software,
the application can use the device's functionality without
the developer needing to code to the system interface
or even having to understand wireless applications.
Users can download applications - such as text chat,
enhanced e-mail, location positioning, games (both online
and offline), and Internet radio - from carrier networks
to any BREW-enabled phone.
Applications include:
Communication – Instant messaging, e-mail, ring-tone
LBS (location-based service) – Marketing to mobile users
by region
Efficiency tools – Mobile Office Applications
Games – Single and multi player interactive games
Mobile Finance – bank account information, mobile retail,
stock transactions
Entertainment – Music, video, humor and in-depth news
reports
Information – Airline schedules, news, weather reports
and sports reports
